POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Quantity Surveyor at Greython is responsible for managing the financial and contractual elements of construction projects from inception to completion. This includes preparing cost estimates, budgets, and tender documents to ensure financial viability. The role requires close coordination with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to monitor costs and forecast expenditures.

The Quantity Surveyor handles contract administration, evaluates change orders, and ensures compliance with legal standards. They prepare cost reports, track project budgets, and help identify potential savings or risks. With skills in value engineering and cost control, they help optimize resources while maintaining quality and timelines.

Reporting to the Project Manager or Director of Construction, they may supervise and mentor Assistant Quantity Surveyors. They also support client communications, negotiations, and financial reporting. Success in this role demands strong analytical, communication, and technical skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and budgets during planning/design

  • Manage tender processes, prepare bid documents, evaluate proposals, support contract awards

  • Monitor and control project costs during construction

  • Administer contracts: review terms, manage variations, ensure compliance

  • Evaluate change orders, assess cost impact, and negotiate with contractors

  • Conduct cost reporting and forecasting for leadership

  • Perform value engineering to identify cost-saving opportunities

  • Measure and value completed work for progress payments

  • Collaborate with engineers, architects, and procurement for financial alignment

  • Identify and mitigate financial risks

  • Maintain accurate documentation for audits, claims, and closeout

  • Mentor and supervise Assistant Quantity Surveyors

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or similar

  • Preferred degrees: Construction Economics, Commercial or Project Management

  • Certifications such as RICS, LEED, or other sustainability credentials are highly valued

  • 5–8 years of experience in quantity surveying on large construction projects

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Deep knowledge of construction costs, contracts, procurement

  • Strong skills in estimating and cost planning

  • Experience in contract administration and managing change orders

  • Expertise in cost reporting and forecasting

  • Ability to read construction drawings and specifications

  • Risk analysis and cost-effective problem solving

  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Lift/carry up to 25 lbs

  • Read/interpret documents and screens

  • Prolonged typing/data entry

  • Desk work and repetitive motion

  • Occasional bending, stooping, reaching

  • Office-based work, with occasional travel to sites/vendors

  • Travel as required

IT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

  • Familiar with ERP/Accounting tools like QuickBooks, Procore, SAP, SAGE

  • Use of phone, laptop, iPad, or tablet for work

  • Familiar with Dropbox or similar file-sharing systems
