POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Project Accountant for Greython Construction plays a vital role in supporting the financial success of construction projects by managing and tracking all project-related financial activities. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate job cost records, processing invoices, and ensuring timely billing and collection efforts. The Project Accountant works closely with Project Managers, subcontractors, and vendors to monitor budgets, track expenses, and reconcile costs against estimates. They prepare and review financial reports, including cost-to-complete forecasts and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules to ensure projects remain financially on track.

In addition to day-to-day accounting tasks, the Project Accountant ensures compliance with contract terms, lien laws, and Company policies. They assist in preparing documentation for audits, change orders, and project closeouts. The role requires proficiency in construction accounting software and a solid understanding of industry-specific financial practices. Effective communication is key, as the Project Accountant serves as a liaison between the accounting department and project teams.

This position typically reports to the Controller or Accounting Manager and may have a relationship with Project Managers. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills are essential, as the role involves managing multiple projects simultaneously. Overall, the Project Accountant contributes directly to the financial health and operational efficiency of the Company’s construction projects.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Track and manage job costs by monitoring labor, materials, subcontractor expenses, and equipment usage

  • Support accurate revenue recognition and project forecasting

  • Ensure proper coding, approvals, and alignment with contract terms

  • Generate and submit customer billings/progress billings in line with schedules and milestones

  • Reconcile project budgets to actual costs and assist in identifying cost overruns or savings

  • Support month-end and year-end close processes with project financial data and journal entries

  • Assist with change order tracking and ensure financial impacts are reflected in budgets and forecasts

  • Maintain documentation for audits and compliance, including lien waivers, insurance, and contracts

  • Collaborate with Project Managers and field staff for financial accuracy and timely reporting

  • Use construction accounting software to track and report project financials

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2-3 years in construction or project-based accounting

  • Proven experience with job costing, WIP schedules, and progress billing

  • Familiarity with lien waivers, insurance certificates, and compliance documentation

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong knowledge of budget tracking, change orders, and forecasting

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred (Associates degree or equivalent also considered)

  • Construction accounting certifications are a plus

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Strong understanding of allocating costs to projects (labor, materials, subcontractors, etc.)

  • Ability to prepare and interpret WIP schedules for profitability and revenue recognition

  • Proficiency in progress billing and billing terms (retainage, milestones)

  • Knowledge of change order accounting and budget revision impacts

  • Familiarity with regulatory documents (lien waivers, certified payroll, insurance certificates)

  • Ability to generate and present financial reports for project teams and leadership

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Lift and carry items up to 25 lbs

  • Read and interpret screens, documents, and written materials

  • Typing and data entry, long keyboard use

  • Prolonged sitting at a desk

  • Overhead and below-waist reach, bending, stooping, repetitive tasks

  • Office work environment adherence

  • Occasional travel to jobsites, vendors, or other locations

IT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks, SAP, SAGE, or ERP systems

  • Procore experience is a plus

  • Use of phone, laptop, tablet for work

  • Dropbox or similar file-sharing platform knowledge
